FEMA Residential Recommendations

FEMA or the Federal Emergency Management Agency has certain codes, standards and recommendations for construction of buildings both commercial and residential. In building your dream home it is important to have the confidence that those codes or standards will be adhered to and that the recommendations followed. These codes are set to help protect homeowners from damages from different hazards that could occur and damage the property. The standards apply to whether you are building, renovating, moving, upsizing, replacing and more. These concern construction, installation and maintenance of the foundation, mechanical systems, and plumbing in the home. At Adkins Building and Construction we know these codes and rules so you don’t have to worry. If you would like to learn for yourself we will provide some basic information here as well as instructions on where to go to research more on your own.

In the coastal areas of the country there are specific concerns when building properties about water damage due to floods, high winds and storms. In the heart of hurricane country it is an annual concern. You have the right to be confident that the home you build or have built is up to standards to withstand the storms and floods that come your way. In the building planning phase flood resistant construction is absolutely necessary if you live in a flood hazard area. There is no one single recommendation for the building as the recommendations must vary depending on which zone you live in and what your specific case is .These plans also take into account whether you want your home to be a one story, two story or more.

The foundation’s design is crucial to the entire home. If the foundation is weak then the home will not be able to withstand the storms, winds and flooding. As well the elevation of the home and even the soil itself is taken into consideration with FEMA’s recommendations. Those factors can determine the depth of the foundation you build. It also can determine what materials you use. With all of those factors taken into consideration, along with the budget we have to work with, we can come up with the plan to build a dream home for you. Knowing the recommendations from FEMA are used to make sure your dream home’s foundation will not fall. We recommend that you research on fema.gov you are wanting to see the codes and recommendations for yourself.
