The terms “remodel” and “renovate” are often used interchangeably, but do they really mean the same thing? Exploring the differences and similarities between the two will help you make better-educated decisions when updating your home or property.

Remodel
Remodel, by definition, means to “change the structure or form of.” Therefore, remodeling refers to any structural change in a building or room. Some examples of remodeling include changing the position of a shower, sink, or electrical unit. Any time you alter the location or position of a room’s structural component, that would be considered “remodeling.”

Renovate
In contrast, the exact definition of “renovate” is to “restore (something old, especially a building) to a good state of repair.” This means that anytime you take a worn, emaciated room or home and restore it to a previous or intended state of improvement, you are renovating that site. Renovate, as the definition says, is indicative of repair and improving a room or building that is already in disrepair.

So, in summation, remodeling and renovation do have different meanings. While your clients, renters, or associates may use them interchangeably, knowing the difference will help you make specific and educated decisions in pertinence to your property.
