Project Highlight: C-139 Annex: Western Everglades Restoration Project

Adkins Building and Construction, a General Contractor (CGC1528214) located in Bradenton, Florida, is proud to announce its involvement in the Western Everglades expansion project. This significant endeavor is part of a larger effort to restore the Everglades ecosystem and strengthen the region’s environmental resilience. Partnering with Ranger Construction, Adkins Building & Construction will build a flow control annex building in Hendry County, Florida, contributing to the ongoing restoration work.

Western Everglades Expansion: Restoring a Vital Ecosystem

The Western Everglades expansion is a critical initiative aimed at revitalizing one of Florida’s most essential natural habitats. For this project, Adkins Building & Construction will help implement key restoration strategies within the C-139 Flow Equalization Basin (FEB), a 29,000-acre area designed to improve water management and ecological balance.

Restoration Strategies

The project focuses on:

  • Restoring ecological connectivity and resilience to historic wetland/upland ecosystems.
  • Reestablishing freshwater flow paths, timings, flow volumes, and sheet flow distributions.
  • Reducing wildfires caused by altered hydrology in the Western Everglades.
  • Restoring and stabilizing water levels.
  • Reintroducing and maintaining native fauna and flora.
  • Achieving low aquatic nutrient levels (oligotrophic conditions).

Western Everglades Expansion Additional Proposed Features

One major proposed feature in Western Everglades expansion project is the development of a 3,420-acre North Feeder STA (Stormwater Treatment Area). This facility will treat water from the North Feeder Canal Basin to meet the target of 13 ppb TP (flow-weighted mean) as part of the canal improvement plan. Within Pond 5N and 5S, flows from the STA will be released into the L-3 Canal, directing water toward the northwest corner of WCA 3A, ensuring improved water quality and ecological function.
